The Buhler Gallery of St. Boniface Hospital is the first of its kind in Canada, a public gallery which displays work of professional artists in curated exhibitions with accompanying public programs including music, readings, talks and panel discussions.
Winnipeg is a city of many ‘firsts’, being home to the oldest civic art gallery in Canada and St. Boniface Hospital, the oldest hospital in Western Canada. It is especially fitting that this initiative in linking art and health took place here.
The Vision of the Buhler Gallery is to be an ‘oasis of contemplation, healing and rejuvenation.
Since opening on September 21, 2007, we’ve had more than 40,000 people visit the gallery. Forty percent of those had never been to a gallery or museum before, underlining the importance of this experience. Approximately a third of the visitors are patients; followed by hospital visitors and St. Boniface Hospital staff.
